The sampling of metalliferous and industrial mineral deposits is undertaken for a variety of reasons and at various stages in their evaluation and exploitation. Our world is endowed with abundant mineral wealth, and streamlining the pit-to-port mineral value chain is of huge importance. The boom in the iron ore trade led to a spike in demand for iron ore, raising challenges for the government authorities to monitor ore movement. The revenue of the top 40 global mining companies represents a vast majority of the whole industry, which amounted to 656 billion U.S. dollars in 2020. The net profit margin of the mining industry decreased from 25 percent in 2010 to 11 percent in 2020.

Since the mineral industry is one of the highest revenue generators for an economy, it is imperative to bring in the highest quality control standards to stop pilferage and manipulation. It is tough to dismantle the legacy systems and processes in mining. However, technology promises to change not by challenging legacy processes but by integrating them with the new. Augmented Reality (AR) has the potential to disrupt the way miners sample ore. The AR-based sampling will randomize the entire sample collection and inspection process to eliminate any chances of mineral manipulation.

As there is currently no element of randomization in the sample collection process and as it is performed manually that leaves a lot of headroom for manipulation and malpractices. Since AR mine sampling process is now a part of integrated mines and minerals management system ensuring accountability and responsibility among the involved stakeholders, thus bringing in transparency to the entire mining cycle.

Need for Tech-based mine sampling

The traditional sampling process had some lacunae and the it becomes challenging to oversee the entire process. Before, the collection of samples was done manually which lacks ample of oversight in which it was inadvertently piling up revenue losses since there was scope for manipulating ore grades in the legacy system. As a tech upgrade, an Augmented Reality (AR)-based Sampling mobile application is implemented to make the sampling collection process easier and more automatic by introducing randomization in the mining stack. Let’s have an idea on the AR Sampling Process flow.

CSM’s Mineral Sampling solution is the first-of-its-kind AR-based intervention implemented anywhere in the world. It’s a testimony to how technology when used right can spell transformative outcomes on the ground. The tech intervention, works in the offline mode too, has redefined the sampling process, ushering in transparency, fixing accountability on stakeholders and rooting out manipulation.
