AI-powered virtual assistants can answer routine questions about taxes, licenses, court dates, benefits and public health around the clock. India offers a particularly powerful illustration. The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution recognizes 22 scheduled languages, while India's linguistic diversity extends far beyond them. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's BHASHINI initiative is designed to use natural-language technologies to help citizens access digital services in their own languages. As of 2026, the platform hosts more than 300 AI-based language models across different technologies.
The objective is simple: make government speak the citizen's language, rather than making the citizen learn government's language.
2. More productive public administration
Much of government work still involves reading documents, extracting information, checking forms, classifying applications and routing requests. AI can automate or assist these high-volume processes, allowing public employees to spend more time on cases requiring judgement, empathy and accountability.
Deloitte has demonstrated generative-AI applications capable of reducing document-processing costs by up to 60% in areas such as customer service, claims, collections and contracts, illustrating the potential of AI-enabled document workflows, although actual public-sector gains will vary by process and implementation.

Perhaps AI's most underrated government application is not automation but sense-making.

AI can help cities respond to conditions rather than merely follow schedules.
Machine-learning systems can analyse traffic patterns and support adaptive traffic management, predict maintenance requirements for roads and water networks, and help emergency agencies model floods, fires and other hazards.
